A Warm Welcome to Winnebago County
Nestled in northern Iowa, Winnebago County offers more than scenic landscapes—it’s a community where neighbors become friends, and life feels a little brighter. For Kenneth and Carol Umbaugh, this sense of community has made Forest City, the county seat, a cherished home. Their journey to Winnebago County highlights the welcoming spirit and opportunities available for families, professionals, and retirees.
A Family's Journey to Forest City
The Umbaughs' story began over 20 years ago when Kenneth accepted a position at Forest City Hospital. The family transitioned from Fort Dodge to Forest City in just a few days. Carol vividly remembers managing a daily checklist that included enrolling their two children in school, securing a job at the Good Samaritan Center, and finding a house to call home.
Despite the whirlwind of their move, the family quickly settled in. Kenneth's job allowed them more time to enjoy their children's school activities—a luxury they hadn’t had in their previous roles. Meanwhile, Carol flourished in her position, and the kids adapted well to life in Forest City. Their son Jacob, who chose to remain in Forest City as an adult, exemplifies the work ethic and community pride instilled by the county.
Thriving Through Change
Although the Umbaughs moved away after the hospital closed, they always wanted to return to Forest City. After retiring, they decided to return, selling their home to one of their grandchildren and settling in at Westown Place.
Kenneth and Carol have embraced retirement in Forest City, now enjoying an actual fireplace—a fitting symbol of their love for the area. "It feels like coming full circle," Kenneth shares, reflecting on their decision to return.
