Outdoor Recreation

Located along the Minnesota border, you’ll enjoy the rolling hills of North Central Iowa’s prairie pothole region, where wilderness enthusiasts flock for the abundance of outdoor activities.  It makes sense then that this is the birthplace of Winnebago Industries, the country’s most iconic manufacturer of outdoor recreational vehicles, headquartered in Forest City, Iowa.  Inspired by the rich availability of public access to county land for camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, bird watching, biking and more, Winnebago Industries is one of our region’s largest employers.

We invite you to explore campsites like Thorpe Park, situated in a quiet oak timber just west of Forest City.  Take your bike for a ride on Hanson Trail,  a paved, off-road trail that parallels Route 9 for its entire length through picturesque farmland, where you have access to Pilot Knob State Park, which contains a bog, man-made lake, hiking trails, campsites and picnic shelters. Well known for its historic tower (the second highest point in Iowa), Pilot Knob visitors can take in stunning views.
