North Iowa is poised to make significant progress in addressing its housing challenges with the upcoming Housing Conference scheduled for April 24, 2025, at The Music Man Square in Mason City. Organized by many regional partners alongside Winn-Worth Betco, this event promises to be an essential gathering of experts, policymakers, and industry leaders, all focused on exploring and implementing innovative housing solutions.
"The conference is essential for equipping business and government leaders, contractors, and social service organizations to engage in discussions about the housing situation in North Iowa," said Sarah DeBour, Cerro Gordo County ISU Extension & Outreach Director and ANR Program Coordinator. “We aim to initiate conversations that will benefit not only the population centers in our region but also the rural areas, preparing them to address housing challenges that promote community growth.”
A Platform for Ideas and Action
The Housing Conference aims to tackle the increasing demand for affordable, quality housing in Winnebago and Worth Counties and beyond. Attendees will gain valuable insights into current housing trends, available funding programs, and collaborative strategies for driving meaningful change.
Debi Durham, Director of the Iowa Finance Authority and Iowa Economic Development Authority, will present on the latest housing innovations in Iowa. Robin Anderson, State Chief Economist, will discuss key housing trends shaping the region's future. Other sessions will cover crucial topics such as home repair and rehabilitation funding, lead-safe certification, innovative building practices, and strategies for recruitment and retention in the construction workforce.
The Power of Collaboration
One of the conference's primary objectives is to foster collaboration through public-private partnerships and community-led initiatives. By bringing together stakeholders from various sectors, the event will enable communities to better understand their options and learn from successful housing projects throughout the state.
"Communities are the driving force behind enhancing the availability of affordable housing," DeBour emphasized. “The conference will serve as an opportunity to educate participants on how to prepare for housing issues in rural and micropolitan Iowa. We have several great examples of successful projects, and the planning team is excited to showcase the possibilities at the conference, illustrating how each community can strengthen its housing offerings through community-led and public-private partnerships.”
Participants are encouraged to come ready to learn and engage. Representatives from cities, contractors, community-based organizations, and businesses across North Iowa are urged to attend and take these valuable insights back to their communities.
Looking Ahead
The Housing Conference aspires to serve as a vital platform for developing solutions that address North Iowa's unique housing needs. Through expert presentations, collaborative discussions, and real-world examples, the event will empower participants to take actionable steps toward expanding housing options and building stronger, more vibrant communities.
